City leaves residents dealing with smelly sewage

PARKTOWN - ACCORDING to Ward 87 councillor, Amanda Forsythe, residents of Parktown and Melville have been left to deal with sewage overflows until the City of Joburg can approve a contractor to fix a collapsed sewerage pipe .

This after The Gazette reported that residents had complained of frequent overflows, claiming Joburg Water had failed to find a solution to permanently address the problem.

The most recent sewage overflow was experienced on 17 July in Parktown, while Melville residents have had to live with a constant overflow on Carlow Road and another on Bamboo Road.

Forsythe said the sewage, which flows from a manhole, has flooded the road with the dirty water, eventually flowing into the storm water drain, which ultimately flows into the Limpopo River.

Forsythe said several Melville residents had reported the problem on Carlow Road and she had been trying to get it fixed for over a week.

“As you know, the 702 Walk-the-Talk went through this very section of the road last weekend [27 July] and I was hoping to have it fixed before then, but to no avail,” she said.

Forsythe explained how, although the problem had been identified by Joburg Water, the delay was with the City of Joburg still having to approve a specialised contractor to deal with the problem.

In a previous e-mail conversation with The Gazette, concerned resident Flo Bird, had noted that the sewage that ran down the gutter on 17 July was flowing into the rainwater system, which led into the Braamfontein Spruit and then on to the Limpopo River.

Forsythe confirmed that the flow of sewage into the storm water drains was illegal, and said she would be taking the issue up with the city council and the MMC for Infrastructure, Matshidiso Mfikoe.
