Silent protest against fur shocks mall patrons

Patrons of a Rosebank mall appeared a little shocked when four women wearing what appeared to be fur jackets splattered with blood walked through the shopping complex.

The women were part of a large group of protesters from the organisations, Fur Free SA, and Speak! who gathered outside the shopping centre in a silent protest against the presence of a shop selling fur.

While four of the protesters wore “fur” jackets splattered with “blood”, the others wore T-shirts bearing slogans and information explaining their opposition to fur.

“Most of the fur animals in the East spend their lives in horrendous conditions before being skinned alive,” said the organiser, Daniel Malan from Speak!.

Although the shop being protested against didn’t obtain its furs from the East, Malan said the owners had never been able to produce evidence of their furs being from “good” fur farms.

“In fact, research shows that there are no “good” fur farms, since we have video evidence of cruelty to fur animals, even in countries such as France and the USA. And fur animals [caught] in steel-jaw traps often spend days slowly bleeding to death in the traps, or gnaw off their own limbs in an effort to escape,” added Daniel.

Anneke Malan from Fur Free SA said the presence of the shop in the Firs was distressing to all people.

“We are appealing to the proprietor to cancel his lease, or at the very least not to renew it,” said Anneke.

The mall had not responded to our request for comment by the time of publication.

This is a developing story and we will update as more information becomes available.
