Fair showcases the best of Parkhurst

PARKHURST - Thousands of people flocked to Verity Park for the relaunch of the Parkhurst Village Fair.

Established to showcase the best of the trendy suburb known for its myriad lifestyle offerings, the fair was run under the auspices of the Parkhurst Residents’ and Business Owners’ Association.

Visitors were encouraged to bring their dogs, and were able to indulge in food from gourmet food trucks including Amexicano, StrEAT Cuisine, and Vuyo’s; the suburb’s own craft beer, 11 Shillings Parkhurst Ale; and stalls that sold everything from Moroccan goods to beard balm.

The fair also placed emphasis on cycling, and the Tour de France was broadcast live – a nod in the direction of resident and 2013 Tour de France winner, Chris Froome.

Children were treated to a play area, while dogs had the chance to show off their owner’s training skills in a dog show.

Mlungisi Gegana’s jazz trio provided a perfect soundtrack through the day.

Association chairperson, Cheryl Labuschagne, said that the fair focused on the things that make a “typical Parkhurst resident tick”.

“The fair showcased and celebrated what makes the suburb unique; a balance between a vibrant high street and lifestyle in a cosy and charming neighbourhood,” she said.

Labuschagne said that this year’s fair attracted the highest number of visitors yet.

“Last year’s fair attracted about 1 400 people, so this year, it was good to be surprised on the upside,” she said.

“We’re still finalising figures, but it looks like 5 000 or so people came to the fair – more than we expected. Some food ran out, but this year’s lessons will only help us make next year’s even bigger and better.”

The fair was held on 26 July in the park on 6th Avenue.
