Celebrate the spirit of Mandela every day

CHOC has encouraged people to extend their Mandela Day to Mandela Month.

During Mandela Day, many corporate companies and organisations pledged their 67 minutes to helping the less fortunate, but Choc is encouraging people not to limit their helping hand to just one day.

Choc’s events, fundraising and relationship co-ordinator, Sophie Ndhlovu, said the organisation is in dire need of toiletries for children who are hospitalised.

“When the children are admitted for treatment, we offer them care bags that we fill with toiletries including, toothpaste, a facecloth, a toothbrush and bath soap,” said Ndhlovu.

“A week ago, a social worker from Donald Gordon medical centre came to get 10 care bags and we did not have enough toiletries. We had to go buy these essentials.”

Ndhlovu explained that when a child is diagnosed with cancer and has to receive treatment at a hospital, “some parents end up leaving their jobs so they can be there for their kids and eventually suffer financially with no funds to buy them toiletries”.

People interested in donating can either drop the toiletries off at Choc House or call for collection.

Details: Sophie Ndhlovu 011 486 1212 or drop off at 16 Eastwold Way, Saxonwold.
