Mandela’s legacy honoured at women’s shelter

MARSHALLTOWN - Nelson Mandela's legacy of selfless service was honoured by Caxton Local Newspapers and by the South African army at a shelter for women and children.

Usindiso Shelter for Abused and Homeless Women and Their Children received much-needed donations and helping hands for odd jobs.

The Caxton team brought donations of groceries, nappies, books, magazines and computer monitors to the shelter located in the former men’s pass office on Albert Street, while members of the army’s 46 SA Brigade swept and mopped floors and worked in the rooftop garden.

Caxton branch manager, Norman Dawe, said that he was happy to play a role in making a difference in the lives of others.

“When one thinks of the history of this building, one realises just how special Usindiso is, and I’m glad we’ve been able to be here today,” he said.

Dawe’s sentiments were echoed by the brigade’s Lieutenant Colonel Mziwonke Mzukwa, who said that the army was there to give assistance to the shelter in remembrance of Mandela, whose life mission was to assist those in need.

The shelter’s social worker, Betty Mabunda said the shelter staff and residents appreciated the good work done by Caxton and the army.

“We feel loved by by you,” she said.
