The not so long walk to freedom

The CAP Run Club commemorated the memory of Nelson Mandela with a 6.7km walk around Houghton.

The walk began at the former South African president’s home in Houghton.

According to Gila Klatzkim, the CAP Run Club is made of a bunch of runners who take to the streets at night in an effort to reclaim their communities.

“The idea of the run this morning is not only to commemorate Mandela, but also to send a message of ‘safer streets for all’, and as well as doing good for the less fortunate,” she said.

On Mandela Day, the run club invited people to donate blankets, clothes, books and shoes.

“All items will be donated to non-profit organisations, including Warm the World, ORT SA and the Mandela Shoe Box organisation,” said Klatzkim.

By 8am on the day the corner of 12th Avenue and 4th Street had been embellished with items that were donated by people.
