Alison play cast announced

JOBURG - The cast of the stage adaptation of Alison Botha's extraordinary survival story was announced by director Maralin Vanrenen.

The play is based on Marianne Thamm’s best-selling book, I Have Life: Alison’s Journey, and will be a celebration of Women’s Month when it opens at Sandton’s Auto and General Theatre on the Square.

“This is a truly extraordinary story about one woman’s determination to beat her attackers and become the victor – and not the victim,” said Vanrenen.

Twenty years ago, just outside Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape Botha was left for dead by her rapists, who had disembowelled her and slit her throat.

But Botha survived, and this play will show audiences how.

“Botha inspires us all to reach deep into ourselves to find our own miracle, no matter what the odds [are],” said Vanrenen.

“Botha’s story speaks for all women, everywhere. Thousands of women and children do not survive their attacks. Let Botha’s story speak for them.”

The demanding lead role will be played by Suanne Braun, her first play in South Africa in 12 years.

Clayton Boyd (The Wild, Mzansi with Love) will play Tienie, the man Botha eventually marries, as well as other roles, while David de Beer (Rhythm City) will take on the role of 19-year-old rapist, Theuns, as well as other roles.

Zak Hendrikz (Askies, Donkerland) will play Frans, the other rapist, as well as other parts, and Shaleen Tobin (The Coconuts) will play all the female roles, apart from Botha.

The play will be produced by Daphne Kuhn and The Women’s Festival, and will feature lighting and set designs by Denis Hutchinson, and costumes by Jemma Kahn.

“No matter the circumstances, you always control your attitude, your beliefs and the choices you make,” said Botha.

The play will run from 6 until 30 August at the Auto and General Theatre on the Square, Nelson Mandela Square, West Street, Sandton.
