Ward councilor encourages cycling in Jozi

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck has taken the challenge of beating traffic the green way.

Electric bicycle and green mobility experts, Cycology has challenged Truluck to take part in an electric cycle experience as part of a campaign to decongest the city.

At the recent C40 Cities Summit, where mayors from around the world converged in Johannesburg to discuss climate change, mayor Parks Tau said the City of Johannesburg had placed a strong emphasis on its green transport initiatives.

Johannesburg is one of the cities that suffer from traffic congestion which ultimately has an influence on Co2 emissions released into the atmosphere.

“I have committed myself to using the bicycle as a form of transport to get to meetings and I must say it is a very efficient means of moving around,” said Truluck.

“Firstly, I save on petrol costs because all I have to do is charge it up when I get home and when I take it out. I don’t worry about having to move my wife’s car to get out of the yard.

“I’ve discovered that it now takes me five minutes to get to a meeting instead of being stuck in traffic for 45 minutes at a time.”

According to Vincent Truter of Cycology, they together with Green Building Council of South Africa and Solid Green Consulting started this campaign in Sandton, but are looking to move into Rosebank, Parkhurst and other parts of the city affected by traffic congestion.

The entities host weekly cycle rides in Sandton as the first step in a campaign aimed at inspiring corporate Sandton to embrace the efficiency and ease of travelling through the city with an electric and non-motorised bicycle.

“The campaign is aimed at getting people to get out of their fuel-guzzling motor vehicles and to shift their mindset on their choice of mobility,” he said.

“The Mayor of Johannesburg, Parks Tau identified cycling as one of the aspects to developing a green-driven city, and we believe getting key individuals on the bicycles can help in shifting the mindset of motorists in Johannesburg.”
