Explore Joburg’s oldest residential suburb on foot
JOBURG - Jeppestown, Joburg's oldest residential suburb, is a treasure trove of buildings, spaces and places that bear testimony to its colourful history.
Explore this fascinating corner of the city on a walking tour with Ancient Secrets’ Ishvara Dhayan this month.
Dhayan said the tour will begin at Maboneng Precinct’s Pan-African restaurant, the House of Baobab.
Among the interesting sights to be explored on the tour are artist Hannelie Coetzee’s mosaic street art, the beautiful Victorian Jooste and Bryants Building, the Mentis Building, and the Jozi Mall with its plethora of Somali shops.
The tour will also explore the suburb’s old Jewish shops and homes, the scenes of the 2008 xenophobic attacks, the Anglican church of St Mary the Less, the restaurant featured in the film The Long Walk to Freedom, traditional herbalists’ shops, the scene of the 2006 Jeppestown Massacre, the first Peruvnik shul, the Jeppestown Synagogue, the 1903 Salisbury Building, and the School of Practical Philosophy.
Dhayan said the tour concludes back at Maboneng Precinct with an optional Senegalese lunch buffet at the House of Baobab.
The tour will take place on 21 June, from the House of Baobab, 20 Kruger Street, Maboneng Precinct, at 10am.
