Wam to host migrant labour discussions, exhibitions this June

With the platinum strike hot on everyone's lips, the Wits Art Museum (Wam) will host a variety of events centred around the issue of migrant labour

Wits Art Museum (Wam) will focus on a variety of talkabout events focused on migrant labour in the country; Philip Miller’s Extracts from the Underground will be the first to take place on 5 June.

Other upcoming events at Wam include a Drop in Drawing class by Gina de Oliveira, which will take place on 7 June at 12pm. The event will be an informal drawing workshop for adults.

Gill Butler will also host a Sunday talkabout entitled Collections Illuminated: an insight into the museums’s African art collection. This talkabout will take place on 8 June at 11am.

Ngezinyawo – Migrant Journeys remains hot on the agenda at Wam as curator, Fiona Rankin-Smith, will host an adult talkabout dealing with the exhibition on 14 June at 12pm. This exciting reflection will be followed by Hazel Cuthbertson’s talkabout focusing on a similar topic, Walking a Migrant’s Journey, which will look at the influence of migrant journeys on African art. This talkabout will take place on 15 June at 11am.

  •  22 June 11am – Sunday talkabout by Jackie Potgieter on Collections Illuminated
  • 28 June 12pm – Adult talkabout with Professor Anitra Nettleton on Ngezinyawo – Migrant Journeys
  •  29 June 11am – Sunday talkabout with Elona Staff on Walking a Migrant’s Journey.
