Film highlights orca plight

MABONENG PRECINCT - Thriller documentary looks at killer killer whale.

A mesmerizing psychological thriller with an orca (killer) whale at its centre will premiere at independent cinema The Bioscope this week.

Blackfish is the first film since Grizzly Man to show how nature can take revenge on human beings when pushed to its limits.

The screening of the film has been made possible through The Bioscope’s new partnership with the Cape Town Eco Film Festival.

Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing orca that killed several people while in captivity.

Director and producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiled shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers, and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.

An emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story, Blackfish could challenge us to consider our relationship with nature, and reveals how little human beings have learned from these highly intelligent and sentient fellow mammals.

Blackfish will run from 16 until 22 May at The Bioscope, 286 Fox Street, Maboneng Precinct, City and Suburban.
