Joburg - Tour company offers visits to city's hidden gems.

Author and city-lover, Gerald Garner has a jam-packed schedule of tours to help residents and visitors rediscover the City of Gold.

Garner’s company, JoburgPlaces, offers tours of and books about the city’s hidden and not-so-hidden gems.

7 June: Fashion, shopping and ancient culture is the order of the day on the Fashion District and Little Addis walking tour.

Visit Joburg’s most famous shweshwe fabric store, do some high-end and bargain fashion shopping, learn about the city’s migrant heritage, and visit the fascinating Ethiopian quarter known as Little Addis.

The tour includes lunch and coffee on the balcony of an authentic Ethiopian restaurant.

The tour will begin at 9am.

8 June: The Newtown-to-Maboneng walking tour will allow sightseers to explore the city’s arts and culture hub, Newtown, as well as the mining district, Gandhi Square, a visit to the Carlton Centre’s Top of Africa observation floor, and a Rea Vaya bus ride to Maboneng Precinct’s Market On Main.

The tour will start at 9am.

21 June: The Regenerated Inner-City Walking Tour will take sightseers through Braamfontein, the retail district, the historic core and the corporate mining district.

Learn more about the astonishing story of Joburg’s gold rush, its glory days, and the impact of apartheid until the eventual decline of the inner city.

The tour will start at 12pm.

29 June: If you missed the first Newtown-to-Maboneng walking tour, fear not.

The tour will take place again, and will start at 9am.
