PARKTOWN – Parktown Girls High School pupils came out tops at the South African Schools [canoeing] Sprint Championships.

PARKTOWN – Parktown Girls High School pupils came out tops at the South African Schools [canoeing] Sprint Championships.

Sprints is recognised as the most important canoeing discipline as it is the main Olympic discipline. Juniors throughout the country compete in the various distances of 200m, 500m, 1000m and 5000m to accumulate points throughout the year.

Overall points accumulated for the various races in K1 and K2 disciplines led to Parys, a small Free State town on the banks of the Vaal River, being the home of the most successful inland school canoeing achievers.

Epworth Girls Natal High School with an accumulation of 150 points came first out of all the high school girls, while Parktown Girls High School finished 2nd with 130 points.

Daniela Afonso, U/18 was one of the top podium achievers, with a bronze medal in a highly competitive age category, having earned 65 points against the winner’s 80 and 75 respectively in first and second place.
