SA-UK sign a memorandum of understanding

PARKTOWN – Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile and the British High Commissioner to South Africa, Judith MacGregor launched the SA-UK Seasons 2014 and 2015 in Parktown.

Over the next two years the collaboration will see the two countries engage in creative programmes to strengthen relations between the two nations.

The collaboration is also expected to open new markets, facilitate skills transfer and create sustainable livelihoods for those in the arts, culture and heritage sectors.

The seasons began as a result of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in between the Department of Arts and Culture and the British Council.

The two will work together to promote institutional collaborations and various other programmes.

Mashatile said this marked the start of an exciting period ahead, “The Seasons, through showcasing our rich arts and culture, will no doubt enhance our well-established relations.”

He said relationship would significantly contribute economically and socially to both countries.

MacGregor said she was delighted about the seasons.

“This season demonstrates the depth and strength of the relationship between SA and the UK, I look forward to continuing and establishing new partnerships between our two countries,” she said.

R2 million each will be contributed by the department and the council to fund the projects and private businesses will also be invited to make contributions.

This Season comes after a France-South Africa Season, which saw about 1000 South Africans showcasing their talents in over 250 French cities.
