Bovim talks ballet, entertainment and Mercury

The highly acclaimed ballet show Queen at the Ballet will see choreographer Sean Bovim’s artistic vision come to life.

The inspired show will see the life and times of revered singer and former Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury, brought to life with music and dance.

The award-winning choreographer and creator of the celebrated ballet said his inspiration behind creating the show came from the work done by Michael Hankinson with some of the Queen hits.

“I really think that Queen’s music and Freddie Mercury’s lifestyle lends itself to a visual fantasy, which was also my inspiration to create this rock ballet,” said Bovim.

Coming from a ballet background, Bovim highlighted that it was only natural for him to bring Mercury’s story to life through dance. Opting to portray the story with dance meant that Bovim was faced with a few challenges, one being trying to convey a story to the audience without using words.

“By fusing contemporary and rock ballet, I have been able to capture an essence of Freddie, not only as a superstar, but also of an ordinary man looking for love,” he added.

The acclaimed choreographer promises an energy-filled ballet show that everyone can marvel in.

Of any future plans, Bovim said he would “love to bring my salute to the King – Elvis, our show called Private Presley, to Joburg.”

Queen at the Ballet will open at the Johannesburg theatre on 26 March and will run until 13 April.
