Wander down Joburg’s spice route

JOBURG - Ancient Secrets tours has planned a feast for the senses with a tour of Joburg's very own spice route.

The Fordsburg walking tour will explore the exotic sights and smells associated with the bazaars and kitchens of the Middle East and the Subcontinent.

Ancient Secrets’ Ishvara Dhyan said the tour would visit Fordsburg’s shops including a Hindu prayer shop, a Pakistani sweet shop, and a fresh produce market that stocks traditional Indian vegetables popular among Durban’s Indian community.

The tour will also take in an Ayurvedic medicine shop, a dried fruit and nut factory, a Bengali fish shop, an Egyptian hookah (water pipe) shop, a Palestinian shawarma shop, a Turkish kebab shop, and the city’s largest Gujarati spice shop.

Once sightseers have explored and shopped to their hearts’ content, they will have the option to conclude the tour with lunch at a traditional Indian restaurant.

The tour will take place on 29 March, from the corner of Mint and Albertina Sisulu streets, Fordsburg, at 10am.

Booking is essential.
