Mamma’s Shebeen offers a unique South African culinary experience

GREENSIDE - Greenside residents looking for a restaurant offering authentic South African food and music need look no further.

Mamma’s Shebeen offers locals a taste of South African culture and cuisine. The restaurant was established in 2006 by Ghanian, Yaw Dwomoh, offers both locals and foreigners a place to meet, connect and experience South African culture.

“I wanted something that was different from what is typically on offer, but something that also spoke to South African culture,” Dwomoh said.

He chose to open the restaurant in Greenside and not in a township as would be expected, because he wanted to move away from the stereotype associated with the term, shebeen.

He said starting the restaurant had its challenges, such as gaining information on how to run a restaurant and learning all the technical aspects involved – both of which Dwomoh had very little experience of.

Despite this, he was convinced that many opportunities existed in the market and decided to push through with the venture.

Dwomoh said that Mamma’s Shebeen is a place that brings people from all walks of life together, and hosts events that cater for these diverse tastes.

One such event is acoustic Sunday which offers musicians the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience.

“Mamma’s Shebeen wants to offer people a unique experience when they come to our restaurant, an alternative eatery where different people can meet,” Dwomoh concluded.
