Gala event honours actuaries

ROSEBANK - The South African Actuaries Development Programme hosted their prestigious alumni gala at the Hyatt Regency in Rosebank to honour recently qualified actuaries and graduates, as well as to welcome the newly-elected chairperson of the organisation.

The non-profit organisation, which was founded by businessman and politician Cyril Ramaphosa, encourages black people to consider actuarial science as a career.

Ramaphosa introduced the new chairperson, Cedrick Masondo, who took the opportunity to congratulate those present.

Masondo also noted how the organisation has grown from only having one qualified actuary to having 135 graduates and 13 qualified actuaries.

“When the company was started, the mission behind it was to develop black actuaries because there were so few of them,” Masondo said.

He also highlighted some of the programmes in place that encourage interest in the profession and the growth of black actuaries.

This includes providing pupils with financial and emotional support during their years at university.

Also present at the gala was Peter Temple, the president of the Actuarial Society of South Africa; he mentioned the role played by the society in developing actuarial students, highlighting long distance courses that are available.

“The role played by the society is crucial as it leads to an increase in the number of black actuaries in South Africa,” he added.
