Zoo operations return to normal

JOBURG - Operations at the Johannesburg Zoo have returned to normal after some employees went on strike.

According to zoo officials, 90 employees stopped working temporarily on 10 February.

“The situation is under control and staff are back at their workstations,” said City Parks and Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley.

She said many of the workers’ grievances were based on operational and general communication concerns, salaries, and the recent merger between City Parks and the zoo.

The merger stemmed from an institutional review process in 2011.

The staff members demanded a meeting with the managing director to discuss their concerns, she said.

The employees were asked to list their grievances and submit it to the managing director, who would investigate their concerns and revert to them with feedback.

The workers’ strike action did not cause any disruptions to the zoo’s operations as other employees ensured that all enclosures were safely secured and supervised any additional feeding that was required, she said.

She added this was part of standard contingency measures – in the event of service disruptions zoo patrons were assured that there was “no cause for alarm”.
