Jozi Film Festival around the corner

JOBURG - The third annual Jozi Film Festival is set to delight film buffs with a line-up of local and international films this month.

The three-day festival will also offer Q&A sessions with filmmakers, workshops and networking events.

“The [festival] will highlight the very best in filmmaking, presenting a multi-genre slate of films from emerging and established filmmakers, exploring a broad range of topics that affect our communities and stir our hearts and minds,” said the festival’s Brendon Burmester.

The opening night film will be the action-packed heist movie, iNumber Number, directed by Donovan Marsh and produced by Quizzical Pictures.

The film, starring S’dumo Mtshali and Presley Chweneyagae, tells the story of an honest undercover policeman who, when cheated out of a reward by his corrupt superiors joins a cash-in-transit heist gang for a once-off score.

“The film was selected as the opening night film for its obvious appeal to Jozi audiences, beautiful cinematography and tense storyline,” said Burmester.

Other films to be screened include Angst, Baba Noel, Berea (African Metropolis), Die Lang Kat, Don’t Shoot the Cat, Love at First Sight, Past Tense, Scapegoat, Security, That Music, The Fall, The World is Burning, Tuesday, Ukhamba, Volti, Durban Poison, Fitrah, Le Savior Est Une Lumier, and Purgatorio, among others.

Festival competition categories will include best feature film, best feature documentary film, best animated film, best fiction short, best documentary short, best student film, audience choice award, and best mobile phone film.

The awards ceremony wrap up the festival.

The Jozi Film Festival is a non-profit organisation dedicated to enriching local culture, supporting the city’s vibrant film community, and reaching new audiences through the powerful language of film.

The festival will take place from 21 to 23 February, with screenings at Killarney Mall Cinecentre, Maboneng Precinct’s The Bioscope Independent Cinema, and the Rand Club.
