Adler’s armature of light and energy

PARKWOOD - American artist Andrew Hart Adler will bring his most recent body of work, Light Whisperer, to South Africa for the first time.

The exhibition, to be held at Resolution Gallery, will emphasise Hart Adler’s universality as well as his excitement to be in this land.

According to the gallery’s Ricardo Fornoni, the artist is renowned for his “complicated, layered services”.

Fornoni said Hart Adler recently began to use the camera as a drawing tool.

“Developing a technique with different aperture openings and movement, then changing the values on the computer, he uses these images of light and energy as an armature for the paint, which he weaves onto the surface,” he said.

“He structures the compositions like music, establishing rhythms, crescendos and spaces to rest in, as the spectator passes from one side of the canvas to the other.”

Born in New York, the artist is the son of the late Broadway songwriter Richard Adler.

Before moving to Cape Town, Hart Adler lived in London, Paris, Munich, the Cote d’Azur, New York City and Long Island.

He spent two years as assistant to abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning.

Hart Adler opened a centre for the performing arts at his Cape Town studio.

Light Whisperer will be on show at Resolution Gallery from 13 February until 14 March.
