Sonja Laxton hit by car while training

The legendary runner Sonja Laxton was injured in a hit and run accident in Rosebank on Sunday morning and had been reportedly admitted to Milpark Hospital.

According to various news reports, Laxton was training when the accident occurred at the corner of Glenhove and Oxford roads.

It is suspected that the driver of the vehicle might have been speeding and that he also allegedly skipped a red robot.

According to the reports, Laxton is “critical but stable, and will probably need a couple of surgeries”.

The reports quoted Laxton’s daughter, Kim, as having said, “They’ll need to repair all her joints that are broken.”

She said her mother suffered broken elbows and shoulders, multiple fractured ribs, a fractured ankle and a fractured spine.

“We got a call from a woman who was waiting with my mom at the Engen garage. It is a busy intersection, but it’s a wide road and we know it was light when it happened,” her daughter said.

Sonja Laxton started running at high school in Port Elizabeth at the age of 13, and has collected 70 national titles.

At an award ceremony hosted by Spar last week at Wanderers Sporting Club, Laxton walked away with the Grandmaster title and prize money of R3500. She participated in the Spar Women’s 10km race on 10 October.

The police were not immediately available for comment.
