Up your cooking skills

PARKHURST - Anyone with a love for the culinary arts will have a chance to improve their skills in the kitchen this September.

Several hands-on cooking, baking and hospitality courses will be held at the Parkhurst Recreation Centre by Dawn Carter.

A four-morning cooking course will begin on 30 August, and students will each receive ingredients and a training manual that includes the course recipes.

Carter said the course would include delicious, economical, and easy to prepare summer and winter dishes, as well as different aspects of basic cooking theory. Among the recipes included in this course are chicken and vegetable paella, chicken stroganoff, curried roast potatoes, and bobotie with a difference.

“As a result of the huge demand in August, we will repeat one of our two-morning baking programmes on Sunday mornings for students unable to attend the Thursday morning classes,” said Carter.

Students will bake dishes like milk tart and apple crumble themselves, using the ingredients provided.

September will also see the start of a 12-morning comprehensive catering and hospitality course. Students have until 1 September to register for the course that will take place on either Saturday or Sunday mornings.

The course will cover topics such as function administration and organisation, the importance of standardised recipes, stock control, food and beverage knowledge, and table setting.

Carter said a three-morning cooking course will be held on Saturday mornings for students unable to attend classes on Thursdays.
