Theft of motor vehicles raises alarm in Norwood

NORWOOD - Theft out of and theft of motor vehicles in Norwood precinct pressganged the police to urge motorists to work closely with the police to reduce the scourge in the area.

Station Commander Colonel Zoleka Kuboni said motorists could play a big part in protecting themselves from being the victims of crime. Kuboni said in most cases, the thieves used jamming devices, duplicate keys, as well as small laptop devices that re-programmed the vehicle.

Kuboni urged motorists to activate their car locking device while they were standing next to the car. “They must make sure that all doors and the boot are locked instead of walking away assuming that the car is locked.” She also urged motorists to notice the car guards and people around the car when parking it.

“Make a note of these people so you can describe them to security or police if needed,” she said.

Kuboni also urged the public to invest in alarms and immobiliser systems.

“Tracking devices are even a better option, if possible link your car’s tracking device to your cellphone so that you can track it yourself and report the car immediately to a tracking company and the police.”

Kuboni encouraged motorists to invest in film layers that can be pasted in windows that make them unbreakable. She added gear locks, steering locks, and pedal locks were also vital in curbing theft of motor vehicles. She appealed to drivers to turn their front wheels to side of the pavement.

“This can avoid the vehicle being towed by another vehicle, and the car cannot be pushed away to a safe distance where they can start the car by wiring the vehicle.”

Kuboni also urged the public to remove one or two fuses to prevent the vehicle to start.
