St John’s 125 Football Festival a success

Schools from around Gauteng joined St John’s College for their 125 Football Festival.

The St John’s College 125 Football Festival went well. The two-day festival was held at the college in Houghton with about 10 schools from Gauteng participating.

Sifiso Nyawo of St John’s Sport said the festival was a part of the events that celebrate the St John’s 125th anniversary.

“It was just looking to bring together some of the schools St John’s plays against on a football front. It was a first-time festival that’s happened at the school, and it went quite well. Schools from around Gauteng came together to play a festival format where teams just got to play each other. It was a great affair as we saw the number of goals grow.”

Nyawo said on the first day the teams scored about 22 goals and that tally went up to about 38 goals on day two. “There were quite a few entertaining matches with St John’s finishing the festival itself unbeaten although they did play two draws and picked up two victories as well. It was an overall great affair for families to come out and enjoy the football affair that was happening on three fields at the school,” he said.

Fortunately, there were no major injuries to players. Nyawo said most of the private schools were coming back from holidays, so it was good to have the boys playing and enjoying football.
