St John’s College learner received honours for music
Angus Charlton began playing instruments at the age of six
St John’s College learner Angus Charlton felt proud to receive honours in music.
Angus said he had been working towards this award for the past three years.
“I was fortunate enough to receive my colours award in the first term of Grade 10, and have been determined to get my honours ever since. Before I could receive this award, I had to pass my Grade 8 practical exam. I received 79% for my Trinity Grade 8 exam in June.”
The 18-year-old said he started playing music when he was six years old. “The brass teacher from the college came to give us a demonstration of the different instruments and I seem to remember thinking he was very cool. I was most impressed by the sound that the trumpet made, and how much volume it could produce for such a relatively small instrument.”
Angus added since then he had been drawn to loud instruments and was also learning to play the bagpipes for the past two years.
The talented musician said there have been times when he struggled to juggle his music lessons with rowing and schoolwork but the support he received from all his teachers, family and friends was what kept him going.
“I need to focus on enjoying making music as much as possible because when I do, I play much better. My teachers have also explained that bad days are as important, if not more important, than good days.”
The trumpet player said his plans include taking a gap year and volunteering as a teaching assistant at a school overseas.
