Joburg learners celebrate National Science Week in Joburg Zoo

Rand Water gives away gifts to learners at the National Science Week at Joburg Zoo.

The Department of Science and Innovation through the South African Agency of Science and Technology Advancement, in partnership with City Parks celebrated National Science Week (NSW) at the Joburg Zoo on August 2.

Various schools from Gauteng attended the event. NSW is an initiative by the department aimed at raising awareness of the importance of science in the daily lives of school learners.

Senior environmental specialist, Nathi Mvula, opened the event by singing the national anthem with the learners.

Learners could visit different stations set up to learn about different careers in science. The science stations showcased biomass power generation, hydroelectric energy, water-electricity conductors, converting waste into energy, and solar energy.

“We are all about protecting and conserving biodiversity. We are to trying to encourage school learners to get into careers involving Stem subjects since it is something that is in high demand,” said Saneliswa Xulu, an environmental educational officer from Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens.

Sizwe Mndawe, a water quality facilitator from Rand Water showed his gratitude to the children who showed interest in the science involving water by giving them pencil cases and water bottles.
