The Turbine Art Fair hosted a successful opening night at Hyde Park Corner

The Turbine Art Fair (TAF) celebrated a milestone on Hyde Park Corner’s rooftop on July 27 and hosted a successful VIP opening night for their four-day art exhibition.

The art fair was open to the public until July 30.

Curated by Palesa Segomotso Motsumi, the founder of Sematsatsa Library, the 2023 TAF Talks Programme promises to be an exceptional gathering of artists, curators, writers, cultural and art practitioners.

Motsumi explained, “The 2023 TAF Talks Programme brings together an array of visionaries in art, sustainability, design, and fashion, with a strong emphasis on storytelling and collaboration, all aimed at propelling the discourse forward.” Fairgoers will be able to attend these enlightening talks free of charge. The talks will take place daily and are on a first come first serve basis

The curators of the fair include:

• Teboho Relasai- His work aims to explore issues of memory, identity, tradition, and cultural hybridity in post-apartheid South Africa. Ralesai uses this sense of displacement and confusion as an opportunity to critically examine the burden of history and its effects on how private memory intersects with collective memory.
• Ashraf Jama- is the writer and researcher for Art Bank SA and a Research Associate in Visual Arts at the University of Johannesburg. He is the co-author of Art in South Africa: The Future Present, and author of Predicaments of Culture in South Africa.
• Shenaz Mohammed- She is currently a lecturer at the School of the Arts at the University of Pretoria and is registered for her PhD in Digital Culture and Media. Her research project entails exploring online platforms as sites for exhibitions and the implementation of alternative curatorial strategies in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The collection, which is focused on celebratory and totemic studies of nine South African cultures, will be presented as an installation of 8m long dresses.

Operating hours are Friday: 10:00 – 21:00, Saturday: 10:00 – 21:00 and Sunday: 10:00 – 17:00.
