Parktown North residents suffer from three big holes on 6th Avenue

Three big holes filled to the brim with water on 6th Avenue, Parktown North, worry residents.

Parktown North residents have complained through the Parktown North Residents Association (PNRA) about the hazards in the road. They often struggle to get into their driveways due to the holes. The hole is in between the gates of two neighbours on 6th Avenue.

PNRA chairperson Lee-Ann Louverdis explained that the hole has brought frustration. She further explained that 5th Avenue residents applied for road closure which was granted and which pushes a lot of traffic to 6th Avenue.

The holes are estimated to be 35m apart from each other which forces people to use one lane to drive in both directions. “We have lots of references of the same situation because they always come here and fix it temporarily; after a day it will start to leak again,” said Louverdis. She added that this might cause accidents at night as some of the holes had no yellow block to show.

“The hole was fixed and closed but I got stuck on July 17, trying to reverse outside,” said resident Julie Sargent.
She added that the hole makes mud on the entrance of her home which is not safe for her as she almost slipped on the floor because of that.

Louverdis explained that an urgent Capex project is required for 6th Avenue in Parktown North. They would like the whole street to be started afresh as Parktown North is an old suburb and most of the pipes are also old.

Rosebank Killarney Gazette emailed Nolwazi Dhlamini, the external communications officer at Joburg Water on July 21. On July 27, Dhlamini responded, saying the depot manager is attending to the Bree Street explosion hence the delay of the response. No further comment was received by the time of going to print.
