Katleho Lynch lives for rugby

Katleho Lynch won the league three consecutive times in his time at UJ and winning the SA u18 test series last year finishing unbeaten.

Katleho Lynch, the head rugby coach at St John’s College lives for rugby.

He first realised that he had a passion for rugby when he was in Grade 8. “One of my mentors saw me in class and asked me to stand up and said ‘I better see you at my next practice’. I have not looked back since,” said Lynch.

Lynch saw sport as a great opportunity to work with a diverse group of individuals who would always be there for you in good and bad times. His forever moment that cemented his love for rugby was when he scored a try in his first game. “I was a winger and had some pace and enjoyed finishing and contributing to the teams I played in.”

His dream in his younger days was to play professional rugby but he realised that he was a better coach than a player. He started to study the game so he could be the best possible coach. “I always used to think about the game and write down my coaching drills and diagrams to try to understand what teams are doing on TV and how I can make the game better.”

Lynch has coached at both the Johannesburg universities, UJ in the Varsity Cup Young Guns and Wits University in the Varsity Cup. Last year, he was appointed the SA Schools coach and currently holds that position.

He looks up to Junior Springbok head coach Bafana Nhleko and likes the simplicity of his coaching.

His support structure is his parents, family and his mentors. “I have big dreams and they always remind me why I started this journey when I am having an off day. I do appreciate them.”
