St Teresa’s School learners support alumna in summiting Mount Kilimanjaro

Lindsay, a fourth year medical student and a group of Wits Health Science students will be summiting Mount Kilimanjaro in December to raise funds for the Smile Foundation.

St Teresa’s Senior Primary School held a Pyjama Day on 3 July and the Junior Primary School held a civvies day on July 7 to support their alumna, Lindsay Bellingan of the Class of 2016.

Lindsay, a fourth-year medical student and a group of Wits Health Science students will summit Mount Kilimanjaro in December to raise funds for the Smile Foundation.

The school’s admission and marketing manager Lianda May said, “The Smile Foundation provides reconstructive surgery for children with various conditions including cleft lip and cleft palate, both of which are debilitating for children and leave them unable to communicate, play and most importantly smile. The reconstructive surgery allows for these children to grow up and thrive in their schools, families and communities.”

May added that the foundation was important to Bellingan and her fellow Health Science students and was aiming to raise R500 000 to sponsor the Smile Foundation’s Smile Week. This will cover all the costs involved in providing reconstructive surgery for between 20 and 40 children in need of their smiles.

The surgery covers pre-operative, operative and post-operative care, after which these children will be able to smile at their families for the first time.

May said by participating in Pyjama Day and Civvies Day, their learners showed their support and encouragement for Bellingan and acknowledged the importance of teamwork, determination, and reaching for your dreams.

“Just like Lindsay aims to conquer the mighty Kilimanjaro, we can all conquer our mountains with the right mindset. We look forward to hearing all about Lindsay’s courageous endeavour and the lessons she learnt along the way.”
