Who’s who in the Zoo

The Johannesburg Zoo celebrated Father’s Day on June 18 by giving their animals treats in the form of fruits and vegetables.

Here are quick facts about Mandrill baboons:

• The mandrill is a large Old World monkey native to west-central Africa. It is one of the most colourful mammals in the world, with red and blue skin on its face and posterior.
• The species is sexually dimorphic, as males have a larger body, longer canine teeth and brighter colouring.
• Mandrills feed on fruit, roots, insects, and small reptiles and amphibians.
• They live in troops consisting of a male and several (occasionally up to 20) females along with their young.

Quick facts about the Colobus monkey:

• Black-and-white colobuses are Old World monkeys of the genus Colobus, native to Africa. They are closely related to the red colobus monkeys of the genus Piliocolobus.
• There are five species of this monkey, and at least eight subspecies.
• They are herbivores
• The species weigh four to 14 kilograms (11 TO 30 POUNDS)
•  Their lifespan is 20 years in the wild
• Their gestation is four to six months
