Johannesburg Water to visit the two-month-long drain leak in Houghton

Johannesburg Water's request for quotations for materials made it difficult to have a definite timeframe for the completion of their work.

The Johannesburg Water team will visit a two-month-long stormwater drain leak in Houghton on June 1 after a Linksfield resident, Rob Kaplan reached out to the Gazette on May 8.

“The stormwater drain has since been leaking faster than ever after I approached the Gazette,” Kaplan said.
“The prestigious suburb is being neglected. Not only are these thousands of litres of good water being washed away down a main road, but the street lights are also burning throughout the day, which is concerning especially during load-shedding.”

Johannesburg Water’s external communications officer, Nolwazi Dhlamini, explained that the team is aware of the litres being lost through the leak, caused by a 600mm valve, which needs to be changed.

Dhlamini added that the technical team will be visiting the site on June 1, but it was difficult to provide a date as to when the leak would be fixed, as Joburg Water is awaiting quotations for the purchase of a new valve.

Ward 73 councillor Eleanor Huggett said Johannesburg Water assured her the stormwater drain leak will be resolved.

“The other ward councillors of Region E and I had a meeting with Joburg Water officials on May 29 and we spoke about the entity’s challenges with resources and fleet. What the public needs to know is that Joburg Water did struggle with fleet issues recently and their turnaround time has been slowed because of this. The issues are slowly being resolved, and we are looking at a return to normal in the next couple of weeks.”
