Ward 74 councillor Belinda motivated to fight lawlessness

The clean-up by multi-entities on Louis Botha between Athol Street and Grenville Avenue revealed that people were dumping chicken heads on pavements.

Ward 74 councillor Belinda Echeozonjoku expressed gratitude for a clean-up that she had requested on Louis Botha. The clean-up which happened on May 24 saw Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Pikitup, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (Crum) come together to clean. They cleaned on Louis Botha Avenue between Athol Street up to Grenville Avenue.

The councillor thanked Ward 74 Urban Inspector, Refiloe Chawane who arranged the clean-up speedily after the councillor’s request last week. “By-law enforcement will follow up, we are tired of lawlessness. People are dumping raw chicken heads etc. on the pavements, not on my watch. Even if we don’t win one round we continue fighting,” councillor Echeozonjoku said. JRA spokesperson Bertha Scheepers said JRA is always happy to participate in multi-entity clean-ups as the roads receive an immediate facelift through skoffelling, litter picking and any other repairs needed to roads, power or water.

“Today the Augmented Field Services were busy skoffeling (clearing the edge of the sidewalk and the road) and once the entire road is completed, JRA will undertake fresh painting of road markings which is needed along Louis Botha,” said Scheepers.

Region E Regional manager from City Parks Jerome Ogle said City Parks participates every Wednesday with Crum in different wards, targeting areas identified by the respective ward councillors. “Yesterday’s (May 24) clean up at Louis Botha Avenue was identified by councilllor Belinda Echeoonjoku of Ward 74 and City Parks was requested to assist with grass cutting along Louis Botha Avenue, which we duly undertook,” said Ogle.

Pikitup had not yet responded to the request to share their comments at the time of going to print.
