Parktown High School for Girls took nine teams down to the recent National All Girls’ Festival in Bloemfontein. The girls gave an excellent performance, walking away with medals for drama and cross-country.

The school participated in nine school activities – choir, cross-country, debating, drama, hockey, marimba, netball, public speaking and tennis – in total 67 learners and 14 staff members went to the festival from April 27 to 30. It was the cross-country’s team first appearance at the festival. Learner Leah Cornell said,” My team and I did exceptionally well, walking away with second place on both the Friday and Saturday races, and ended the weekend with a bang when Nicola Smith won junior runner of the festival.”

The choir and marimba girls attended workshops on the first two days. A prepared piece was shared within the choir and marimba community and on the final day all the choir groups sang together. The debate team captain, Christina Vaudran, reported that the team took the festival by storm, winning every single preliminary round unanimously, but sadly, could not get to the finals.

“Our winning streak unfortunately ended in the semi-finals against Rustenburg Girls, a Western Cape team. Despite our disappointment at not going through to the finals, we left the festival feeling incredibly proud of all our efforts,” said Vaudran.

The public-speaking girls had to prepare one speech in advance to be performed on day one. Amani Docrat spoke about social media in the senior section in the morning and Lwethu Lubisi spoke about kindness with the juniors in the afternoon. Amani was selected as one of the top five seniors after days one and two, which meant she had to give her prepared speech again on the morning of day three. She was then announced as the fourth-best speaker in the senior category at the competition.

Hockey captain and learner Simamokele Komane reported that on day two, they played four games of tough hockey, which unfortunately resulted in them placing fifth in their pool. On Saturday, they ended on a high note by taking the lessons of the previous day and went on to win all four of their matches.
