St John’s College play remembered struggle icon Chris Hani

April 10 marked the 30th anniversary of the death of anti-apartheid activist Chris Hani.

St John’s College in Houghton was proud to present Hani – The Legacy, the school’s annual major production from March 22-25.

Chris Hani’s widow, Limpho Hani, attend the opening performance and the two daughters Neo and Lindiwe attended the final performance.

Hani – The Legacy tells the exceptional story of the struggle hero, in a vibrant and contemporary hip-hop style.

Head of drama, Pippa Sandilands said the play was inspired by the original Market Theatre Laboratory production from 2018.

“We were so inspired by the energy and passion of the performers, and knew this was a play we would love to do at our school, with a bigger cast.”

 

Sandilands added that four different students portrayed Hani at various stages of his life as he tackled injustice and led change.

Transformation & Diversity deputy head, Allan Magubane said it was fitting to bring a focus to Hani’s life through Hani – The legacy since this month marks 30 years since Chris Hani was assassinated.
