Roedean Senior learner pleasantly surprised about leadership role

Tumelo Thelejane is part of the school's swimming team and is aiming for full colours in the sport.

Tumelo Thelejane says she cannot wait to serve Roedean Senior School with her new title as head girl.

The 17-year-old said although she nominated herself for the position, being announced as head girl for 2023 surprised her.

“The process of being selected entails putting your name forward for the ‘head or deputy head girl’ positions and then grade 11’s choose the top five. Being in the top five made me realise how serious the process was and I was grateful to have gone that far in the process.”

Thelejane added that previous seniors have inspired her to nominate herself for the head girl position.

The grade 11 learner said although she enjoyed academics, she was also passionate about social responsibilities.

“I enjoy knitting squares, at school we knit squares and put them together to form a blanket. Before I did the initiative because it was part of community service, but only in 2020 I realised that the squares actually meant something to people who were less fortunate.”

Thelejane noted that her favourite subjects included French because she said learning a new language was an escape for her and Life Orientation which kept her informed about life’s many realities.

She concluded that with her new leadership title in the new year, she’d remain a friendly leader while reinforcing the school’s rules.

“I won’t be doing anything differently from the previous head girls but reinforcing rules and not being harsh and feared by anyone.”
