Exclusive Books in Rosebank hosts fun-filled literacy celebration

In commemoration of Roger Hargreaves’s series of books, Exclusive Books hosted a literacy celebration of the book series which has helped families bond for many generations.

Children gathered at Rosebank’s Exclusive Books to celebrate literacy as a human right and the foundation of all learning.

Fun-filled activities were the order of the afternoon at the bookshop on October 15 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of author Roger Hargreaves’ book Mr Tickle.

Public relations liaison Sue Symondson shared that the original inspiration for the books was a simple question from a child who had asked Hargreaves what a tickle looked like. In 1971, Hargreaves answered the question by creating Mr Tickle which was the beginning of the Mr Men book series and their ever-growing world of ‘Happyland’.

“They were soon joined by characters of the Little Miss series and the exploits of both remain incredibly popular to this day, encouraging children to read and helping family generations to bond,” said Symondson.

She added that to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the book series, the Royal Mint released The 50th Anniversary of Mr Men 2021 Collection. In addition, The South African Gold Coin Exchange (SAGCE) and The Scoin Shop ‘toasted’ the beloved Mr Men and Little Miss characters with a series of gold and silver collectable coins available exclusively from them.

Jonathan Ball Publishers will join SAGCE and The Scoin Shop to show additional support for literacy and encourage reading.
