Bramley’s junior MMC Stacey Fru seeks support to fund empowerment initiatives

To bring empowerment initiatives to life, recently inaugurated MMC in the Johannesburg Student Council, Stacey Fru is seeking buyers for her books and pledges of donations.

Child rights activist and author Stacey Fru is one of the future movers and shakers on a mission.

Dorcas Gwenhure of the Stacey Fru Foundation based in Bramley shared having been elected in May as junior MMC for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg Student Council, Stacey, the junior mayor and nine junior mayoral portfolios were inaugurated into the council. The inauguration was conducted in the presence of the honourable Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse and the Speaker of Council Vasco Da Gama.

The Johannesburg Student Council is a council consisting of more than 100 high-school learners from 45 schools across the city and falls under the office of the Speaker of Council. The council’s young members are on a mission to give a voice to the youth of the city; to raise issues and possible solutions specific to high school learners. At the same time, they are learning everything there is to know about local government, from how political decisions take effect to the duties and responsibilities of everyone involved.

Gwenhure said the 15-year-old councillor founded the Johannesburg-based Stacey Fru Foundation. “The foundation which focuses to empower African children is a literacy, safety and security organisation with initiatives to educate, empower and encourage children and adults alike. Amongst other things, the foundation’s initiatives include creating partnerships that aim at elevating the African child,” she said.

Adding to that, Stacey said, “The foundation seeks buyers who are willing to donate my books and other books and learning materials to schools, institutions and libraries, and seeking pledges and donations that enable me to travel to schools in rural areas and/or transport rural children to the cities for specific foundation activities.”

Stacey’s influence spreads across African countries as she honours other African children who are impacting their communities by awarding them during the Annual AfrICAN Children of the Year Awards held every November in South Africa.

Ever since she became the MMC, Stacey so far has donated some books to learners in Soweto. She read a few chapters from her first book titled Smelly Cats at Rooderport Theatre, where she also delivered a talk on the importance of literacy. She is currently organising a Women Empowerment Conference to be held at the end of August in commemoration of Women’s Month, to be hosted in Johannesburg.

Stacey is the current face of the African Union and International Labour Organisation 2021 International Campaign for the Elimination of Child Labour #EndChildLabour.
