SA Rugby reveals ‘big sponsor announcement’ for Springbok Women
The cat was finally let out of the bag in Melrose Arch as SA Rugby announced who their principal sponsor for Springbok women is.
The spotlight continues to shine on women in South African sports.
And none more so at The Venue in Melrose Arch where guests had been invited to share an ‘exciting announcement’ about the Springbok Women. True to their word, SA Rugby president Mark Alexander announced on August 10 that First National Bank (FNB) would be the principal partner of the team.
The bank has been a partner of SA Rugby and the team since 2017.
Event MC, Motshidisi Mohono expressed her hope that the partnership would be successful in attracting more girls to play rugby.
FNB CEO Jacques Celliers said for 185 years they have shared their magic with society at the grassroots level. “It’s a great month to announce this news as Springboks set the stage to rebuild our mojo. Women’s rugby stands for so much that the country needs. The world of sports has such a nation-building theme. We are proud of all our national teams and being able to play our part as a business to uplift them is such a privilege,” added Celliers.
Women’s Rugby High-Performance manager Lynne Cantwell said with this kind of backing it was possible to do more. “This will allow us to have a greater reach to the girls in communities so that they can see they are represented and there is a future for them in sports. It will allow the larger communities to join us in the goal of reimagining what is possible,” said Cantwell.
Adding to that, FNB chief marketing officer Faye Mfikwe said, “We have a significant role to play, not just in rugby, but in the broader society. We need to be able to drive change and inspire young girls out there to change the world.”
The Springbok Women will, after a series of matches, will go into their final preparations before the Rugby World Cup which kicks off in October in New Zealand. The Springbok Women will come up against France (October 8), Fiji (October 16) and England (October 23) in their pool matches.
