A clean-up initiative in Waverley

Less plastic use and more recycling, be the change you wish to see in the world, says Judy Rothberg

Waverley resident Judy Rothberg could not sit back and watch her suburb become covered in litter and turned into an illegal dump site.

Rothberg said there was nothing that gets to her more than litter, either being tossed out of the car or illegal dumping.

She added littering showed a lack of respect for the environment.

“Driving to work every day or just to the shops up the road, the mess saddens me. I feel we deserve better, and for me, the only solution is to get out there and clean it up.”

Rothberg highlighted that a few years ago, the A Re Sebetseng project started which was a community-municipality collaboration that involved volunteers who lived in the area, and there were clean-ups once a month.

Following that example, Rothberg and a handful of residents take to the street and clean up once a month and make a difference.

“Many hands make light work, and it is good to be in the company of others who also get a thrill from cleaning. I enjoy the monthly clean-ups but also try to clean around my neighbourhood any chance I get.”

She said she had involved her children and the learners of St Mary’s School in this initiative and encouraged people to separate their waste for recyclers to make a difference.
