CPF serves those who serve us

After the July unrests last year, the Sandringham CPF and Dee Jays Deli began to feed those who serve the community and have revived it this winter.

What better way to start a cold winter morning than with a hot cup of soup and roll?

The Sandringham Community Police Forum (CPF) and Dee Jays Deli and Bakery in Percelia Estate are working together to provide warm food for the law enforcement crew in the area.

Tzipporah Berman of the Sandringham CPF said they started the initiative last year during the July unrest. “We decided we’d do it again this year. This year has been so cold and we wanted to give back to the law enforcement. Even though there are currently no riots, they still put their lives on the line on a continuous basis,” she said.

Berman said they approached Dee Jays who, as usual, came through above and beyond. “We began with the night shift staff and then the day shift staff got upset so we decided to blend the two together. So, we have made it a bit of a social scene,” Berman said.

Dee Jays Deli manager Steve Dewey said they help community members with food when they haven’t got, on a regular basis. “So, when this came along, we thought it was a great opportunity to give to the public, sectors, guards and security because they do so much for us. In our area now there are a lot of homeless people walking around and with crime going on, they keep us safe. When we have an incident, within seconds they’re there to come and see that everything is okay. It’s never anything too hard or too big for them to do to come and look out for us. So, by us giving back, we are blessed to have them in our community,” Dewey said.

He added that the officers were out in the early hours of the morning right through the night and they became very cold so the cup of soup and a roll in the morning made a world of difference as it kept them warm. He concluded, “We would like this to be a regular thing and will have a discussion about that.”
