School aims to make sleeping bags for Mandela Day

During this cold season, Kingsmead College in Rosebank has set out to make sleeping bags for the homeless.

Kingsmead College is hosting a Make-and-Donate-a-Sleeping-Bag event on Mandela Day, July 18. Director of marketing at the school in Rosebank Alex Bouche said sleeping bags will be made from newspaper and recycled plastic and donated to Doorway to Dignity for distribution to the homeless. “Each sleeping bag is lightweight, water resistant and surprisingly warm.”

Schools, companies, families, and visitors are invited to give 67 minutes for Mandela Day to make a sleeping bag and to bring warmth and comfort to someone sleeping on the streets.

Sessions are available from 08:00 until 17:00 at Kingsmead College (entrance in Tottenham Avenue). A registration fee of R100 will cover the cost of the material.

Teams or individuals can join on the day. For more information and to book a slot, please visit the Kingsmead College website www.kingsmead.co.za or email service@kingsmead.co.za.
