Water pipe replacement project creates over 100 jobs in ward 73

Ward 73 receives new water pipes.

Ward 73 councillor Daniel Schay is pleased with the progress being made to instal and replace water pipes in Glenhazel phase three.

“This is George Avenue, these guys have been working on this particular street for about two weeks digging here. The entire project began two and a half months ago. This particular project is an overlap of the Glenhazel project, but the Sandringham project is ongoing as well and started at the same time,” he said.

Schay added over 100 jobs were created for the project which is set to last for six months.

“Each project employs 15 direct labourers from the community. There are three phases to each project ongoing in the different areas. There are 90 labourers and with the people employed by the contractors we’ve created well over 100 jobs through the project.”

A resident in the area, Ashley Graham, said she was relieved the water pipes were being replaced. “I am glad and thankful that the water pipes are finally being replaced and we can have a constant water supply without worrying about water shortages that would go one for days.”

Community liaison officer Dimpho Selepe said the project began with a few teething problems.”The main difficulties have been trying to find the correct roads to change the pipes because a lot of the pipes were already changed in the area.
“Working with the residents is also tricky because some residents expect us to be finished already, but they don’t understand that it is a process which entails checking the water pressure once the pipes have been installed.”

Schay added, “Hopefully after this, the water leaks and wastage will be practically down to zero, which will be a great service to the residents and encourage business that they have constant water supply.”
