A chance to actively participate in fight against crime

Parkview Police invites residents to join community in blue patrollers.

Residents in the Parkview policing precinct have been encouraged to join the Community in Blue (CIB) patrollers.

Sharing the call on behalf of the Parkview Police Station Commander Colonel Devan Govender, spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said being a CIB patroller meant that a community member volunteered as a community patroller within a patrol group that reported to the local Community Police Forum (CPF).

This is regulated in a way in which a community member can actively participate in the fight against crime without a professional qualification or previous experience.

The objectives of the CIB concept are to promote reporting of criminal activities and any suspicious behaviour in the communities, increased visibility to deter criminal activities, and active community participation in crime prevention initiatives.

Parkview police has two sectors: Sector 1 which consists of Craighall Park, Dunkeld West, Parkhurst and Parktown North. Sector 2 is Emmarentia, Greenside, Parkview, Parktown, Parktown West, Roosevelt Park and Westcliff.

The following principles of volunteering as a patroller should be adhered to: professionalism, accountability, dedication and commitment, honesty, transparency and non-discriminatory practices.

The patroller should get involved in structured community safety initiatives, projects, and a formal police community partnership. The patroller is expected to: know, understand the code of conduct and adhere to it; understand channels of communication and utilise them appropriately; perform duties promptly and reliably; patrol in approved uniform and insignia and report to the CPF, sector forum and sector commander.

All recruited patrollers must complete a registration form and must submit fingerprints for screening purposes. Fingerprints will be forwarded to the local Criminal Record Centre for verification.

Currently Parkview police has about 60 registered CIB patrollers. Govender said there needed to be patrollers in each suburb in Parkview’s policing precinct. “We are ready and waiting for you to join the Community in Blue patrollers. Interested residents may contact Captain Augustus on 079 499 0120 or CPF deputy chairperson Wayne Lurie at vicechair@parkviewcpf.co.za,” concluded Govender.
