Aim for fun, games and wins

A football club aims to develop competitive league players.

A Johannesburg-based soccer club promotes four overarching themes of community, quality, equality and fun.

The team, founded in 2019 by Sharen and Shivaan Naidoo, aims to provide an opportunity to all soccer players within the region to play within a recognised competitive league irrespective of race or creed.

The Imperium Football Club (FC), according to Sharen, obtained its name from the Latin word imperium which translates to absolute power; area of dominion. “This is the idea behind Imperium FC; to become the recognised local leader in the South African Football Association (Safa) Rand Central League in terms of soccer training, youth development and the development of a competitive team,” said Sharen.

He added that due to Covid-19, the league was postponed to 2021 and within their first year of competing, the team finished third in the Safa Rand Central Local Football Association (LFA) League. Sharen said this league is the largest LFA within Gauteng, therefore, this was quite an accomplishment for Imperium FC’s first season.

Imperium FC trains at the Zoo Lake Sports Club in Parkview and comprises a 24-man team of players of all ages, races, cultures and creeds. Sharen shared that as a company, the club consists of a sole club chairman, Kanthan Naidoo, as well as other operations staff and football development staff – a majority of which are volunteers.

Sharen concluded, “The 2022 season has kicked off as of April 1, with the goal for the season being to win the league and ultimately gain promotion to the Castle/South African Breweries Regional League. The team’s progress can be followed via the My Safa website. Our next fixture will be on May 7 against Varsity College at Wits Sturrock Park.”
