Once upon a time at De La Salle Holy Cross College

VICTORY PARK – The junior school took everyone on a magical journey as they dressed up as storybook characters.

One autumn morning in Victory Park, the children of De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School arrived as their favourite storybook characters.

Attending school on March 24, for their ‘Once upon a time’ themed day, were the likes of Snow White, Huckleberry Finn, Little Red Riding Hood, and many more enchanting characters.

The school has always had a special event to commemorate the importance of reading and keep this tradition going as for them, they are not only fostering a love for reading among the children, but they also are bringing these characters to life.

School librarian Julia Heaney said they called it Once Upon A Time day because it did not fall on World Book Day and so they made it their own. “The kids dressed in some of the most gorgeous costumes, often most unusual and beautifully created by their mums and dads. We just had the best time.”

“I was dressed up as Matilda,” said Caitlin Magee, adding that because of this everyone then had to call Matilda instead of her nickname, Katie. “I feel very good about reading, I think it’s really interesting that all the pictures have different stories and I love reading.”

Grade 3 learner, Matthew Gearing was the powerful Harry Potter – a costume he found great joy getting into as he loves the character. “It’s amazing to read books because you never know what the next page is going to be.”

Fellow learner Timothy Hodgson-Jervis said he enjoys reading as he gets to learn so much. He also thinks the more you read, the smarter you get, “Some books just blow me away because they have a twist at the end.”
