Cellphone snatching on the rise

PARKHURST – Sibeko said that numerous cases of common robberies that had been reported at the Parkview Police Station use the same modus operandi.

Residents are warned about a rise in common robberies outside restaurants in the Parkview Policing Precinct.

Spokesperson for the Parkview Police Station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the following suburbs are affected:

• Sector 1: Marlborough Avenue in Craighall Park, Dunkeld West, Delta Park, 4th and 14th streets in Parkhurst and 7th and 6th streets in Parktown North

• Sector 2: Greenway and Gleneagles Roads in Greenside.

Sibeko said that numerous cases of common robberies had been reported at the Parkview Police Station using the same modus operandi.

“The complainant alleges that while waiting for e-hailing transport outside restaurants an unknown man grabs his/her cellphone and jumps inside a car and drives off,” said Sibeko.

She advises patrons to take heed of the following tips:

• Avoid using cellphones outside restaurants while requesting e-hailing for transport

• Wait inside the restaurant for e-hailing services to arrive

• Keep personal belongings such as cellphones, handbags and wallets safe.

“Police are appealing to the community to assist with information that could lead to the possible arrest of suspects.

Anyone with information can contact Parkview SAPS on 011 067 6000 or Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.”
