Festive safety tips from Sandringham police

SANDRINGHAM – The station has assured the community of their visibility in various areas of the precinct throughout the festive season.

With community members engaging in various activities during the festive season, Sandringham police will be on standby to ensure safety.

In a statement shared by Sandringham police spokesperson Warrant Officer Aaron Lebuso on behalf of Acting Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Nkosana Mbhele, there will be high police visibility in residential areas, shopping complexes, parks and crime hotspots.

“Many activities will be taking place this festive season and as the SAPS we would like to share a few safety tips with our communities,” said Mbhele.

He urged community members not to leave their homes unguarded for long periods as criminals used this time of the year as an opportunity to break into houses. “Please ensure that there’s someone who is looking after your homes when you go on vacation and if you will be away for a long period.”

Mbhele advised those visiting shopping centres should avoid carrying a lot of cash and rather pay with their bank cards. “When you withdraw at an ATM, always be vigilant and assess your surroundings for any suspicious people next to ATMs. Do not allow strangers who offer their help when the ATM is appearing to be giving you problems.

Rather seek the assistance of the bank security guards. Avoid using ATMs that have no security guards around and are situated in the dark.”

He said when driving, people should keep valuable items out of sight. “Keep your bags and valuables in the boot of the car. Items left loose in the vehicle attract smash and grab criminals.

“Always be cautious of people asking for directions, especially at secluded areas and intersections. Some pretend to be lost only to hijack you when you are busy giving directions. Avoid driving alone during the night. When you have a puncture, try to drive to the nearest police station to sort out your problem and if possible, avoid changing tyres next to the road at night.”

Drivers were also advised to not drink and drive as well as adhere to the curfew.

“Sandringham SAPS would like to wish everyone a safe and joyous festive season. Let us all comply with the Covid-19 regulations. Let us not forget to wear our masks, maintain social distance and vaccinate.”
