Adoption home could use some generosity this festive season

WESTCLIFF – The home seeks urgent funds for most of their infrastructure repairs.

Princess Alice Adoption Home in Westcliff has just marked its 91st anniversary as a residential centre that cares for up to 30 babies and toddlers.

The babies, who are up to three years old, have either been consented to adoption or abandoned, according to manager Jo-Anne Schermeier. “Some of our babies are high risk and others have a level of special needs that our staff are qualified to manage. The majority of children, with proper care, are healthy and thriving,” she revealed.

She added that as for everybody, the past 18 months have been challenging as the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions and lockdowns altered people’s daily lives. Schermeier said many of the activities that were central to the home’s operations, such as an energetic volunteer programme and running fundraising events, have not yet been able to resume.

“We have had to find ways to move forward and adapt, and could not have done so without the support of our friends and donors.”

“In 2022, we will be facing the urgent need to replace worn-out windows, doors and parts of the roof that have seen years of weathering and use. Additional funding has to be found for the maintenance project and the repairs must be done with the approval of both Westcliff Residents Association and the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority – Gauteng. We quite literally are fundraising to keep the roof over our babies’ heads!”

She concluded that the home would like to request the community to assist by donating nappies (sizes two, three and four); milk formula; wet wipes; washing powder; baby bath soap or Dis-Chem/Pick n Pay gift vouchers.

EFT donations can be made as well and all proceeds assist directly in caring for 30 vulnerable babies and toddlers.
